Hawks prevented Trump from making a “big deal” with Russia
Anti-Russian “hawks” in the United States turned out to be strong and actually thwarted the possibility of concluding a “grand deal” between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which was discussed quite recently, after the election of a new American president.
Dmitry Danilov, head of the European Security Department at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated this in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
According to him, proof of this is the latest signals from the State Department, whose representatives announced the continuation of sanctions against the Russian Federation over Ukraine, despite the fact that the implementation of the Minsk agreements is disrupted, first of all, by Kyiv itself.

“With the vote on Obamacare, Trump was made clear that he actually has no maneuver, and he needs to pay for support in Congress. Obviously, the main factor in the senators' confirmation of key figures in his administration was relations with Russia. Now this is rebroadcast in a wider format at every opportunity,” says the expert.
According to him, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is arriving in Brussels for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, will most likely speak about the absence of plans for a “grand deal.” It will pave the way for Trump's visit to the alliance's May summit.
“Tillerson must reassure Europeans with assurances that, firstly, the United States remains the guarantor of European security. And secondly, there will be no behind-the-scenes agreements between Trump and Putin, which is so feared in the Old World. This confirmation is very important on the eve of the NATO summit, which Trump will attend. Tillerson will promise that no surprises should be expected from the president,” Danilov said.
