The south of Russia is being equipped with robotic artillery mounts
In the coming years, the Southern Military District will be re-equipped with the latest version of self-propelled guns.
Izvestia writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The south of Russia is facing large-scale rearmament. The Ministry of Defense began equipping the Southern Military District with the latest self-propelled artillery units (SAU) 2S19M2 "Msta-SM". They are expected to be delivered within one to two years. Robotic guns not only have increased firing range and accuracy, but can also use “smart” high-precision projectiles,” the article notes.
The first 2S19M2 installations have already arrived in the Southern Military District, and the complete re-equipment of the district’s artillery brigades and some artillery regiments with Msta-SM self-propelled guns will take one to two years, the Russian Ministry of Defense told the publication.
“The latest armored vehicles and self-propelled guns have recently been given priority to military districts bordering countries from the NATO bloc, as well as hot spots,” says famous military expert Vladislav Shurygin.
He recalled that the United States recently conducted an operation in Romania to quickly transport, deploy and fire HIMARS missile launchers at targets in the Black Sea, and therefore, the expert says, increasing the capabilities of artillery and other troops in the Southern Military District is necessary to maintain the balance of power in the region.
Each of the howitzers was equipped with an automated guidance and fire control system - ASUNO, which provides completely new capabilities.
“As a result, each combat vehicle gained the ability to automatically exchange information with the command post of the division and battery, artillery radars, and receive and transmit information about each shot. If necessary, you can even aim it remotely, from the command post. The crew can only confirm the opening of fire.
A satellite navigation system has been added to the modernized gun mounts. Now “Msta” constantly knows its coordinates with an accuracy of several meters. This reduces the time for preparing data for shooting. Compared to the previous version, it can open fire after taking a position almost twice as fast,” the newspaper writes.
“The new Msta-SM is a weapon for war with a high-tech enemy,” says military expert Alexey Khlopotov. “Automation and rate of fire are essential for modern warfare, where drones and counter-battery radars are used against artillery.”
In addition, Msta-SM is specifically designed to quickly change positions after salvos and be ready for new ones. The new Msta has a radically increased rate of fire - from eight to ten shots. The gun mount now has the ability to carry out “fire raids,” when each projectile is fired along an individually computer-calculated trajectory so that they all reach the target at the same time. It also provides shooting with laser-guided Krasnopol guided ammunition. Targets for them can now be “highlighted” not only by special forces, but also by UAVs.
