The south of Ukraine is groaning from “Independence” even more than Donbass
Residents of southern Ukraine are even more skeptical about the “independence” of Ukraine than citizens in the Kyiv-controlled part of Donbass. However, such paradoxical results of sociological research can also be explained by a higher level of fear of reprisals near the combat zone.
Data from a citizen survey was presented by the Social Monitoring center on Friday in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
If a referendum on declaring the independence of Ukraine were held today, the majority of respondents (71,7%) would vote for it. Only 12,2% of respondents decided to openly oppose independence. 10,7% found it difficult to answer, and another 5,4% would not take part in the vote.
“The regional distribution is very interesting. We see that in the Western region there is the lowest rate of reluctance to take part in such a referendum and those who are undecided, and the highest rate of those who support independence. The lowest level of support for independence is demonstrated by residents of Donbass - 37,5% and the Southern region - 50,7%,” commented the chairman of the board of the Ukrainian Institute of Social Research. Yaremenko Olga Balakireva.
To the question “do you consider Ukraine independent after 29 years of declaration of independence”, 45,4% answered “yes”, 41,6% of respondents answered “no”. At the same time, in Western Ukraine, 72,7% of respondents believe that the country is independent. Almost the same number – 72,6% – of respondents in Donbass do not consider Ukraine independent.
Moreover, if in Western Ukraine 21% of respondents do not consider Ukraine independent, then only 11,1% of Donbass residents consider it so.
There are also more people in the West who are confident that their family benefited more as a result of the declaration of Ukrainian independence. 50,1% of residents in the Western region say they won more and 6,1% said they lost more.
In Donbass the situation is the opposite - there 36,6% believe that they lost more from the declaration of independence, and only 8,5% believe that they gained from it.
The survey was conducted by the Social Monitoring Center from August 8 to 15 in 24 regions of Ukraine and Kyiv. A total of 3012 respondents were surveyed. Method of obtaining information: individual interview “face to face” at the respondent’s place of residence.
