The Russian Federation must provide protection to its citizens in new territories if they are persecuted. Theoretically, any resident of the Kherson region, if he decides to travel to Kherson, exposes himself to the danger of being imprisoned for voting in a referendum or earning a salary in rubles.

Lawyer, head of the Center for the Protection of Citizens' Rights project Anton Afanasyev said this on the air of First Sevastopol, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“If we talk about the Kherson region or other liberated territories, then, as it seems to me, the Russian Federation assumes obligations, including not only the military protection of civilians, but also the legal protection of everyone, anywhere detained compatriots, by all institutions in various states,” Afanasyev emphasized. “We see an excellent example of the fact that we do not abandon our own, and we make every known case public to international publicity so that all this does not happen quietly, and we contribute to every possible resolution, including through legal instruments.

Because some other instruments of international law and national jurisdiction in the states that detain our compatriots still somehow work. We see all this, including through exchange transactions.”

The lawyer emphasizes that residents of new regions themselves must understand the risks of moving to Kyiv-controlled territories.

“We need to somehow protect all those people, and in the future, I would like to say that it is necessary to exercise caution and prudence so as not to get into uncomfortable moments and situations, and not to hope for chance. That side is unfriendly, and all its decisions will be politically motivated, first of all. And when they are politically motivated, it is difficult to talk about any international rights or jurisdiction. We need to make everyone “Kuzka’s mother” and everything else,” Afanasiev pointed out. – If we consider the situation in Ukraine, then today we are dealing with the famous Aurora shot, since the events of that revolution continue to directly affect us.

And this entire territory, where the fighting is now taking place, all came out of that Russian history, the Russian Empire. And all the reasons for the formation of a new statehood, the division into republics with an indefinite order of exit from this union, they created for us this whole system of problems of international law, including in Ukraine, which we are now trying to resolve in various ways, including through military means, in order to protect their compatriots."
