Yanukovych's lawyer won in the General Court of the European Union: A wake-up call for Maidan activists
The General Court of the European Union on Monday annulled European sanctions against Andrei Portnov, the curator of the legal block of the presidential administration under Viktor Yanukovych. The court also found unreliable the arguments cited by European countries that imposed sanctions against close supporters of Yanukovych, writes Politico.

The sanctions were imposed on the basis of accusations by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. The General Court of the European Union found these accusations to be unsubstantiated and unsubstantiated.
The court noted that the letter from the Ukrainian Prosecutor General contained unsubstantiated accusations and that it was not possible to obtain from the Prosecutor General of Ukraine “any details or facts confirming Portnov’s guilt.”
The publication notes that this decision has far-reaching consequences.
Like Portnov, other close supporters of Yanukovych have gone to the EU courts, complaining they were sanctioned solely on the grounds of "Recommendations from the Prosecutor of Ukraine."
The decision could ruin relations between Europe and the US government, the authors of the material believe. The reason is that this action may call into question the entire block of sanctions against Ukrainian politicians disliked by the new government.
Portnov himself confirmed in his blog that “the decision of the Court will become a source of international law and will be used in many other international trials.”
“This decision will also complete the cycle of legal struggle with EU officials involved in discrediting me, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine and functionaries of the ruling Ukrainian government.
In the second cycle, the Ukrainian President, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine and officials of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine need to prepare for defense,” Portnov announces.
Another lawyer from Yanukovych’s former team, ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy Irina Berezhnaya, has already stated that Portnov’s victory in the European court is “a long-awaited Victory that completely changes the political context in post-Maidan Ukraine and, I am sure, the principles of forming EU sanctions lists.”
“Horses, dry yourself! A grandiose “zrada” is brewing, because official Kyiv will not be able to ignore this historic decision. The claim against the EU has been satisfied on all counts!” – Berezhnaya clarifies.
