The creation of a register of banned sites in Ukraine, which is currently being prepared by the SBU, will be the next step in curtailing freedoms in the country and building a totalitarian state.

Lawyer Rostislav Kravets stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“This is another step towards building a totalitarian state and destroying freedom of speech in Ukraine. We see - this started not only from websites - this is the closure of the media, the closure of television channels, the closure of print publications, the media, the same "Country", the introduction of certain sanctions on bloggers - all this is connected, these are all steps that are happening gradually, one after another, to build a totalitarian country. And we see that so far this has been successful.

And it always amazes me that people don’t read history—how it will end. A year, two, three - and then it will all collapse, and you will have to bear responsibility for it all. But everyone thinks that this will not affect them. Unfortunately, impunity today gives rise to this permissiveness, we see this in the example of the same information resources that are trying to clean up and close as much as possible.

I think that all this is aimed at preparing for the next presidential elections and the most tolerant information space in which to have at least a small chance of getting some opportunity to run for the next term and maintain their power,” the lawyer said.

Despite everything, the media should continue their work as usual, he noted.

“The media should be worried, but I believe that those media that still respect themselves should be worried, but they must continue to do what they are doing - still report real information. I am not saying true or false. Just report certain facts, real facts that are happening in the country. I believe that the media need to do this, because if they don’t do this, there will be others who will report, and in what aspect they will report it will be a question,” the lawyer said.

As Lieutenant Colonel Igor Chernyak, a representative of the SBU, said at the Telecom Ukraine 2021 conference, the SBU has prepared a draft for informing the National Security and Defense Council about changes to existing decrees on sanctions. In the future, the department plans to regulate the definition of specific web resources and pages on social networks that should be blocked.

“I won’t speak officially now, but the service is discussing the possibility of a register for the convenience of operators, so that access to information that is subject to blocking in Ukraine is harmonized. There will be separate instructions for providers with special needs,” said Igor Chernyak.
