Yushchenko admitted: when he was president, Ukrainians wanted to see Putin, not him, at the head of the country
Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko said that in 2008, the majority of Ukrainians wanted to see Vladimir Putin as head of their state.

He spoke about this in today’s interview with the Kyiv publication “Apostrophe”.
“We did sociology in 2008, when I was still president. At that time, 70 percent of Ukrainians wanted to see Putin as head of state. More than half of Ukrainians answered yes to the question of whether they want to see Vladimir Putin as their president,” Yushchenko said.
He added that the Kyiv authorities were unable to maintain control over Crimea and Donbass due to weak national identity and lack of national unity.
“We need to look for the reason within ourselves, and if we see it, then there is a chance to correct everything and we will become worthy opponents of Putin’s Russia. In order to defeat the enemy, you must hate him. These are the words of the great humanist Ilya Ehrenburg, who taught in 1941 how to defeat the fascists, how to form the spirit of victory,” Yushchenko noted.
