The agency reports that the new gas pipeline, which will be built instead of South Stream, will begin supplying the first gas to Turkey by December 2016. The gas pipeline capacity is 63 billion cubic meters. This capacity will be enough to completely exclude Ukraine from the list of gas transporters.
Under the new plan, the EU would have to build its own gas pipeline to Turkey's border to receive Russian gas, which currently accounts for about a third of Europe's needs. About half of this amount is currently pumped through Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Alexey Miller said that the new gas pipeline will consist of four lines with a capacity of 15,75 billion cubic meters each. In addition, Turkey already receives Russian gas through existing routes in the amount of 27,4 billion cubic meters last year. Thus, Turkey will completely take Ukraine’s place in the continental gas transportation system within two years.
