Kovalenko is accused of speaking out against the war in Donbass back in 2014 and trying to prevent the sending of troops to the so-called ATO zone.

“Poroshenko and his entire retinue are criminals, murderers of their own people. They started the war in Donbass. I remain unconvinced, I am for peace. The ATO is illegal and justice will come soon. You will all answer for these atrocities,” Kovalenko said in his last word.

After the verdict, he was handcuffed and sent to a pre-trial detention center. The court gave 10 days to appeal the verdict.

Journalist Ruslan Kotsaba was once convicted under a similar article, but then the verdict was overturned on appeal.
