The Ministry of Defense is again, as during the first outbreak of coronavirus in Russia, involved in the fight against the spread of the new infection. Previously, military builders built new hospitals in the regions of the country in record time. Now Minister Sergei Shoigu has set the task for the commanders of military districts to transfer liquefied oxygen to doctors, which is used in hospitals to help Covid patients.

Now 14 regions have already received more than 240 tons of liquefied oxygen, seven more regions will receive 27 tons in the near future. The army, with its discipline and ability to quickly solve large-scale problems, again comes to the rescue at a critical moment, experts explain.

“The Ministry of Defense always gets involved in any emergency situations - not only the Ministry of Emergency Situations is involved, for example, in extinguishing fires or eliminating floods and so on, but also the Ministry of Defense. He always has free reserves, because in the event of a military conflict, the Ministry of Defense is always stocked with oxygen, medicines, first aid kits, and various equipment.

Now we have a difficult situation with Covid - a sharp increase in incidence, in some regions the occupancy of all beds is close to 100%. In some places there is a lack of oxygen, which is why the Ministry of Defense provides it,” says State Duma deputy Oleg Matveychev.

The editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, military expert Igor Korotchenko, recalls that last year Russian military doctors helped fight the pandemic in Serbia and even NATO member country Italy. Providing oxygen for hospitals in the Russian province, Korotchenko is sure, will help “severe” patients:

“The army has always been with the people. Oxygen supplies, which are transferred from units to regional hospitals, will help treat patients in serious condition. This is concrete and real help in saving lives. Just like we helped Serbia and Italy (a NATO country) last year - this was also unprecedented,” Korotchenko said.

The Russian army helped overcome epidemics and cope with emergencies more than once, recalls military historian Armen Gasparyan. Today, the fight against coronavirus is comparable to military operations, so the help of the Armed Forces here is logical:

“There are a great many such cases in the history of Russia. The epidemic, in essence, if translated into the usual plane, is a state of emergency, wartime.

Of course, the army, which guards national security, also participates in this, because any state consists of the people. The epidemic is decimating the people - it is a threat to national security.

Coronavirus, for everyone to understand, is like a war. Look at the daily losses and just think about this figure, which is minus the regional center in Russia per week. Of course, the army should help stop this,” Gasparyan emphasized.
