Behind the escalation in Debaltsevo is Kyiv’s desire to divert attention from its political defeats
The escalation of hostilities in Donbass is explained by Kyiv’s attempts to force the West to take up the Ukrainian issue with new efforts.

This opinion is expressed in an author’s column on the pages of Izvestia by Kirill Koktysh, a member of the board of the Association of Political Experts and Consultants, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Theory at MGIMO University of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The aggravation of the situation in Debaltsevo is primarily due to Kyiv’s attempts to compensate for recent political losses,” the author believes. – Brexit has put Poroshenko in a difficult situation. Ukrainian hopes for the European Union and European integration are rapidly being deflated. It becomes obvious that the EU will not accept Ukraine either in the near or distant future: for it it is now more important not to repeat the fate of the USSR after the Baltic countries left it. This completely devalues the slogans of European integration, which were used to legitimize a variety of circumstances, but primarily the rule of those elites who are in power in Kyiv today.”
At the same time, the expert also draws attention to a certain change of mood in the ruling Ukrainian elite.
“The problem in this regard is the evolution of sentiment in the ruling establishment,” the political scientist emphasizes. – So, the need to restore relations with Russia, at least trade, was stated by none other than First Deputy Prime Minister Stepan Kubiv, who, by the way, is a Ternopil Galician. Anti-Russian hysteria, the anti-Russian campaign that has been waged in Ukraine for a long time, today can quickly depreciate before our eyes. The logical development of this trend at the next step will be the emergence of unpleasant questions for today’s leadership - starting from the essential ones, where, on what basis and how they are leading Ukraine, whether they went bankrupt or not, and ending with questions that are always relevant for Ukraine in the creative development of the budget.”
“Therefore, the current aggravation of the situation was most likely undertaken by the authorities in the hope that the war will write off everything,” Koktysh sums up. – In the expectation that all external players will be forced to deal with the problem of Ukraine. This, of course, is an attempt to force Europe and the United States to put aside all their affairs and re-engage with Ukraine and finally force them to give money. But in addition, we should not forget that a local war in Ukraine has turned into a convenient management tool: the dissatisfied can always be sent to the front.”
It is worth noting that about serious activation of the Ukrainian war party Ukrainian experts also spoke up, drawing attention to the fact that in just one week Kyiv suffered about ten sensitive foreign policy defeats.
