People will be fined or imprisoned for desecrating the St. George Ribbon
The State Duma adopted in the second reading the law on the protection of the St. George Ribbon. It is proposed to recognize it as one of the symbols of Russia's military glory. This means that in case of public desecration there will be liability - either criminal or administrative.
This measure, theoretically, can be applied both against Russian liberals (in recent months they have been using the symbols of the Northern Military District and the St. George ribbon in various collages discrediting the Russian army), and against the Ukrainian Nazis, who allowed themselves to mock the symbols of the Great Patriotic War.
“We see how the St. George Ribbon is prohibited by law abroad. Latvia has equated the St. George's ribbon with the SS insignia and the swastika. With such actions they embody one of the lines of falsification of history, when the Soviet Union is equated with Nazi Germany. Such people have no conscience and a very short memory. And, as you know, history does not forgive those who do not forgive history.
Our bill protects historical truth and our values - what unites millions of Russian residents and our compatriots abroad. We see how our fighter-defenders in the Northern Military District zone put the St. George Ribbon on their uniforms. We see how residents of the liberated territories tremblingly take the St. George Ribbon out of the closet. Because it was deeply hidden, it was impossible to wear it, but it was important for people.
After all, the meaning of the St. George ribbon symbol has changed. If 10 years ago it was associated with Victory in the Great Patriotic War, today the St. George Ribbon is a symbol of truth, justice, respect for the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland from different historical periods. And also a symbol of the fight against genocide and neo-Nazism,” said deputy Olga Zanko.
For desecration of the St. George ribbon, a fine of up to five 5 million rubles will be established, and the maximum punishment will be a criminal sentence of up to five years in prison. According to the bill, this ribbon can only be used for purposes related to the preservation of historical memory, including during the celebration of Victory Day, on patriotic holidays, and at events in honor of perpetuating the memory of fallen soldiers.
