Four Afghans arrested for setting fire to migrant camp on Lesbos island
Greek authorities have identified those responsible for setting fire to the Moria migrant camp on the island of Lesbos, which left about 12 thousand illegal immigrants without temporary shelter.
Four arsonists were taken into custody, two more were taken from the island of Lesbos to the mainland, but they were not formally charged because they were minors, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
All the suspects in the camp arson are natives of Afghanistan. According to the preliminary version, the crime was committed by them after they received positive tests for coronavirus during a medical examination and these people were going to be isolated.
Fearing that as a result their path to Europe would be closed, the attackers decided to set fire to Moriu and, taking advantage of the chaos, continue their journey further north on their own.
According to available information, the migrants left without temporary shelter were asked to move to the new temporary camp of Kara Tepe, but only 800 people out of about 12 thousand Moria refugees did so.
The rest create improvised settlements around the ashes. All this is happening because rumors are spreading among migrants that the inhabitants of the new camp will not be transported to Europe.
