The publication notes that the Ukrainian president was awarded this title for his assistance in returning to the city paintings stolen from the Castelvecchio Museum, which were later found on the territory of Ukraine.
Now activists of the Anti-Fascist Ukraine committee want to challenge the decision of the local authorities.
“The decision to award Petro Poroshenko, who became the head of the Ukrainian government as a result of elections held in an atmosphere of street violence and civil war in the Donbass, offends a deep sense of justice and is a sign of disrespect for universal human rights,” the petition says, also drawing attention to the fact that , that the current president of Ukraine is at the head of the political-institutional system that was formed as a result of the coup d’etat of February 2014, “as a result of which the previous legally elected president Yanukovych was overthrown.”
In addition, the document talks about repressions against the Russian-speaking population of Donbass and serious pressure on the opposition. The authors refer to reports from the UN and Amnesty International, noting that Kyiv’s actions do not comply with the “European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.”
The organizers of the collection of signatures admit that they have no particular illusions that Poroshenko’s title will be immediately revoked, but they are convinced that their campaign will draw attention to the situation in Ukraine and the crimes committed on its territory.
“The document has already been signed by representatives of the creative intelligentsia, scientific and banking circles, some members of the Verona city council, as well as activists of the national association of Italian partisans. In the near future, the petition will be submitted for consideration to the guarantor of the Constitution, Italian President Sergio Mattarella,” writes RG.
