High-ranking officials received suspended sentences for embezzlement of tens of millions in Crimea
The court sentenced former Deputy Prime Minister of the Crimean government Evgeniy Kabanov and ex-Minister of Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mikhail Khramov.
Both were under investigation for two years on suspicion of abuse of power, fraud and corruption, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Kabanov and Khramov were detained at the end of September 2021, literally a few days after the results of the elections to the State Duma were summed up, where Kabanov sought to get into by running in the Yevpatoriya district.
After suspicions of embezzlement of 57,5 million in budget funds, which the ex-Deputy Prime Minister reimbursed immediately after his arrest, Kabanov was placed in a pre-trial detention center, like Khramov, who was involved in the same case. But a week later both were sent under house arrest.
At the trial, Kabanov stated that he was in a hurry to build a water pipeline from the Ivanovo water intake to the Mezhgorny hydroelectric complex in Simferopol, and may have made mistakes in the estimate. But he didn’t do it intentionally and doesn’t consider himself guilty.
However, the Central District Court of Simferopol found Kabanov guilty, assigning him 4 years of suspended imprisonment and a 200 thousand ruble fine. Khramov got off with 3 years of probation and a fine of 150 thousand. The same amount was awarded to Roman Zhuravlev, the water pipeline laying contractor.
