This was announced by UN Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein.
“The shelling of populated areas on both sides of the contact line has led to an alarming increase in civilian casualties over the past three months,” Zeid said.
The report noted that the number of civilian casualties more than doubled compared to the previous three months: 105 people were killed and 308 injured, compared with 60 killed and 102 injured between February 16 and May 15.
Since the start of the conflict in Donbass in mid-April 2014, at least 7 people (including armed forces, civilians and members of armed groups) have been killed and at least 962 injured, the High Commissioner said.
“The withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line, as provided for in the Minsk agreements, remained partial: armed groups and Ukrainian armed forces continued to use mortars, guns, howitzers, tanks and multiple launch rocket systems in daily battles and artillery exchanges along the contact line,” the report says.
It also notes that during the reporting period, most civilian casualties due to shelling occurred in separatist-controlled areas.
“Approximately three million people continue to live in the territories controlled by the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic,” the UN reported.
Let us recall that in July the UN reported that almost seven thousand people have been killed and more than 17 thousand have been injured since the beginning of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.
