Forget about Ukrainian missiles. Kyiv ends cooperation with the CIS in the space sector
The Government of Ukraine has agreed to terminate the Agreement on Joint Activities for the Research and Use of Outer Space.
Ukrainian media reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This agreement was signed by the CIS member states on December 30, 1991. It was aimed at resolving key issues related to the implementation by the participating states of the agreement on joint activities in the exploration and use of outer space. The basis for joint activities are interstate programs, the development and implementation of which is coordinated by the Interstate Space Council.
The cancellation of another non-working agreement was a continuation of the policy of severing ties with the CIS, notes the president of the Ukrainian Analytical Center, economist Alexander Okhrimenko, in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“A lot of agreements were concluded within the CIS, all of them are canceled, and, ultimately, will be canceled. In fact, Ukraine has already left the CIS, although de jure it is still in the CIS. But representatives of Ukraine do not participate in meetings, do not maintain any contacts, and since 2014, a policy has been pursued to completely sever ties with the CIS. And the current decision is a continuation of this policy. All agreements within the CIS are canceled and will eventually be canceled,” says the expert.
“The agreement on joint activities in the exploration and use of outer space has not worked since 2014, when a decision was made to ban military cooperation with Russia - the military and space spheres are closely connected. When this agreement was in effect, Ukraine implemented some projects within its framework. For example, the creation and production of the Dnepr launch vehicle was underway. Now everyone has long forgotten about Dnepr,” said Okhrimenko
