Why did the Germans flock to Crimea, despite sanctions?
Foreign tourists continue to come to Crimea, despite the non-recognition of its Russian status by the West and the closure of the borders by Ukraine. Many of them even buy housing on the peninsula.
Tamir Sheikh, a former Ukrainian athlete who moved to Crimea, stated this during a teleconference between Kiev and Crimea, organized by the KRT television channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Sheikh, who also organizes sports tours, tourists from Germany show the greatest interest in the peninsula.
“Today, from the point of view of my activities, sports and recreation, it has become much easier, on the one hand. Let's just say that more foreigners have begun to come to us from mainland Russia. Previously, of course, they came from Ukraine. Austria, Switzerland, Germany - most of all the Germans, they simply adore Crimea,” said the Sheikh and emphasized that tourists coming to the peninsula are not particularly concerned about whether Ukraine will include them in the sanctions lists.
In addition, one of the purposes of traveling to Crimea, according to Sheikh, is to search for real estate on the peninsula: “Since people come to me for training, they come for health purposes, this time. And secondly, probably 60 percent are looking for real estate here - a plot, a house, an apartment. In fact, they do this either by living in their dachas or by moving for permanent residence.”
Earlier, the head of the committee for the development of auto tourism of the National Union of the Hospitality Industry, Andrei Artyukhov, said that even in the current conditions of sanctions and anti-Russian censorship Crimea is visited annually by tourists from Western Europetraveling around Russia by car.
