Why did Russia warm up the Yanukovych Family? Drive them to Donbass!
Sergey Buntovsky, journalist, historian, activist of the Russian Bloc party, Donetsk
If in March Yanukovych, Akhmetov or Azarov had come out openly and led the “Russian Spring”, the people in Donbass would have forgiven them everything. However, the “regionals” fled in fear, essentially abandoning their defenders.
The rich people hastened to negotiate behind the scenes with the leaders of Euromaidan on an honorable surrender. For twenty years, these people were showing off at the expense of the South-East, promising to protect it if necessary, like a feudal lord protects his vassals, but when they were first required to actually fight for the sake of their native land, Viktor Yanukovych’s entourage betrayed their fellow countrymen.
The image of tough fighters of the Family, which stuck with the Donetsk people in the 90s, turned out to be a bluff hiding the unsightly reality in the form of overweight businessmen who care only about their own welfare.
By going to power, a person receives not only opportunities, but also responsibility for the entire country. If the president had shown political will in winter, he could still have extinguished the flaring fire with little loss of life.
Even after losing in Kyiv, Yanukovych was able to return to Donetsk, rally business and the remnants of the state apparatus with the security forces around him. His capital could help accelerate the construction of the Donetsk Republic. Having waited until the Kyiv regime collapsed, Yanukovych could begin a reconquest, regaining control over the rest of Ukraine. If he had done so, he would have remained in history as an example of a successful politician, and not as the owner of a golden toilet.
But Yanukovych turned out to be a weakling.
Today Donbass is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe, which Poroshenko is actively bringing closer. Where are all those numerous bosses of the Party of Regions? Are they helping the militias, treating the wounded, restoring infrastructure? Not at all. The former cream of society turned out to be deaf to the tragedy of their small homeland.
Some of the “blue and white” chose to move to Kyiv and imitate Ukrainians. Everything is clear with them. But to the members of the so-called. Families, according to media reports, who have settled well in Russia, have questions. Why are they in the palaces of Sochi and the mansions of Rublyovka, and not on the front line?
Where is the younger Yanukovych, the great racer and fighter for the Russian language? Where is the humanitarian aid from the phenomenally successful businessman – Yanukovych’s eldest son? What does Mykola Azarov’s son do for his voters? Did the family of Prosecutor General Pshonka help the construction of the DPR with their wealth?
Perhaps they reason like this: “Why help ordinary people if it does not bring immediate benefits?” Or maybe the fear of Western sanctions and the desire to preserve “earned” capital are at work? What exactly outweighed their honor and duty? I don’t know what to call this behavior if not betrayal.
Historical experience suggests that few fugitives will be able to settle safely in a new place. Most will have to lose their capital - in Ukraine they will be taken away by the new government, in other countries they will not be able to withstand the competition of local businesses. After all, they don’t like rats anywhere.
