Transcarpathia may become Hungarian Gagauzia
Despite Kyiv's opposition, the Hungarian authorities continue to look for opportunities to support Transcarpathian Hungarians.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports this, citing sources in the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.
The publication’s interlocutor said that Budapest is studying the experience of Moldova, where in 1994 the Gagauz, living compactly in the south of the country, received autonomy.
Then, facing the threat of an interethnic conflict, given that the day before the independent Gagauz Republic had been proclaimed there and an armed conflict could have broken out, the decision of the Moldovan parliament to create the autonomous territorial entity Gagauz Yeri became a solution that satisfied both Chisinau and the Gagauz people, and Brussels
At the same time, in recent years, Chisinau has tried to change the law on Gagauz autonomy and narrow its rights.
The newspaper recalls that during his recent visit to Moldova, Turkish President Recep Erdogan said that the Gagauz and Turks are one people.
In addition, the leader of the Moldovan Social Democrats, Victor Shelin, said that the European Union warned Chisinau not to use pressure on the Gagauz autonomy, since the EU does not need another conflict on its borders.
“Hungarian diplomats are studying the situation in Gagauzia, which, by the way, is economically stable and successfully trades with the EU, Turkey and Russia. Russian schools operate in the autonomy - this is the decision of the population. Graduates study at universities in Turkey and Russia. All this is being taken into account in Budapest, and it is possible that Kyiv has received an invitation to a conversation on the topic of resolving the Hungarian issue in Transcarpathia,” the publication notes.
