Only smugglers will save Transcarpathia from the Donbass scenario – Gopko
One of the safeguards against the “Donbass scenario” for Transcarpathia will be corrupt and criminal local elites, like those who did not support the idea of Novorossiya in 2014.
The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of the previous convocation, ex-deputy, nationalist Anna Gopko, stated this on the NTA TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Should we be afraid of the Donetsk scenario in Transcarpathia?” – asked the presenter.
“I don’t think so, after all, Hungary is a member of NATO and the EU,” the ex-deputy objected. – Yes, they have close ties and interdependence in the energy sector with the Russian Federation; we have often seen how, after visits to Moscow or contacts, the number of accusations towards Ukraine or unfriendly statements increased.
But I think that Ukraine’s resilience there and its ability to repel various attempts, from separatism to such unfriendly acts, is quite powerful.”
“There is also a very important point - the issue of smuggling, who makes money from it. And these commercial interests of the elites on the ground, it is important that they remain at a critical moment. Do you remember how in 2014 there was a plan to build Novorossiya? Capture Odessa, Kharkov, the Dnieper, and so on.
Therefore, it is very important how these local elites will behave in the event of such a specific attack, but I still think that in Transcarpathia, taking into account Hungary’s membership in the EU and NATO, this is certain safety precautions,” says Gopko .
