Official representative of the department Maria Zakharova stated this today, commenting on the murder of Pavel Sheremet in Kyiv.

“The Foreign Ministry has established an ongoing dialogue with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of Speech. We provide specific facts, figures, cases of what is happening in Ukraine with journalists. We are not saying that Ukraine is bad. We say that there is a problem with the safety of media workers. On each occasion we make statements, write letters, and raise this topic during negotiations. But, unfortunately, we see that the trend is the opposite. Instead of ensuring security, everything is going in the other direction,” Zakharova said.

In her opinion, Sheremet’s murder is a “dangerous trait” and should be investigated “impartially and detached from politics.”

“This is a red warning light that Ukraine has approached a very dangerous line, and maybe has already crossed it. The road to this point was short. Over the past two years, a huge number of journalists, including Russian ones, have died. Unfortunately, Ukraine in its current state evokes nothing but pity. The question is what needs to be done so that the people who work there as journalists are not in danger,” Zakharova said.
