Zakharova: Russian-language media continue to be persecuted in the West
In many European countries, a large-scale campaign of discrimination and repression against Russian and Russian-language media continues.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this at a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It seems that the West has developed a new mechanism for measuring and determining the popularity of Russian media. The “thing” is simple. It lies in the fact that as soon as the media becomes in demand, massive pressure immediately begins using all possible methods,” she said.
Maria Zakharova emphasized that the growing popularity of Russian-language media resources that provide objective information haunts Russophobes in the Baltic states and other Western countries.
The “best” (or rather, the worst, because they are engaged in an ignoble matter) minds of NATO and the corresponding structures that feed around this military bloc are only thinking about how to harm the Russian and Russian-language media.
Using similar totalitarian methods, including intimidation, criminal prosecution and closure of bank accounts, the activities of the Russian news agency Sputnik-Estonia have been blocked since 2020.
The current situation lies beyond the understanding of basic democratic values and Tallinn’s international obligations to ensure the unhindered operation of the media, freedom of expression and equal access to information,” the diplomat added.
She noted that the charges of “money laundering and terrorist financing” brought against this information portal are unsubstantiated and insignificant.
“They are insignificant not from the point of view of the fact that there is no evidence behind them (this is obvious), but because people who engage in such fakes, compilations and manipulations humiliate themselves, the concept of media freedom, and derogate the profession,” Zakharova said.
The diplomat is convinced that such repressions cause serious damage to bilateral relations between Russia and Western countries.
“We call on relevant international structures, first of all, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, to condemn attacks on Russian-language media in Estonia and take appropriate measures to rectify this unacceptable situation,” concluded the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
