Despite the utmost clarity and study of the Munich Treaty, which actually initiated the outbreak of World War II, today in the West attempts are being made to distort history and blame the outbreak of the war on the USSR.

Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this at a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“In order to remind (and we will do this regularly) of our common history associated with the Second World War, I would like to talk about the anniversary of the Munich agreement.

In the history of diplomacy, there was hardly a more blatant precedent of open violation of the canons of international law, and generally accepted ethical norms, than the hastily convened conference of four powers in Munich on September 29-30, 1938 - England, France, Germany and Italy. It remained in history as one of the most shameful and tragic phenomena, pages of history, the logical consequence and continuation of which was the Second World War.

There was basically no discussion on the merits; the conference was a formal approval of a pre-agreed deal between the participants. The project proposed by Mussolini, which was communicated to him from Berlin, was adopted as a basis. Representatives of Czechoslovakia, as well as the USSR, which had a mutual assistance agreement with Czechoslovakia, were not invited to the conference. The Czechoslovak delegation that arrived in Munich did not participate in the negotiations, but was only informed after the fact about their results.

Hungary and Poland also bear their share of responsibility for the division of Czechoslovakia, which during the Czechoslovak crisis took an openly pro-German position and then put forward their own claims to Czechoslovak territories.

Essentially, the Munich Conference was the culmination of Hitler’s “appeasement” policy, a kind of prelude to the start of World War II, finally freeing the hands of the aggressor,” said a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

She was also indignant that despite the utmost clarity of those events, today in the West attempts have begun to rewrite history and accuse the USSR of inciting World War II.

“A large number of scientific works and documentary publications are devoted to the Munich Agreement, otherwise known as the Munich Agreement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR/Russia alone published seven documentary collections on this period. I will list them: “The Year of Crisis”, “Documents on the History of the Munich Agreement”, “The USSR in the Struggle for Peace on the Eve of the Second World War”, the 21st volume of the fundamental series “Documents of the Foreign Policy of the USSR”. And that's not all - just a few names.

It would seem that everything here is extremely clear. However, even today attempts are being made to falsify the events of that period, which have little to do with the search for objective truth. The authors of a number of publications continue to make persistent attempts to justify the Munich agreement, distort the true goals of its organizers, and belittle its role as one of the most important links in the chain of events that led to the outbreak of World War II.

We regard such publications as a desire to undermine established ideas about the war, to reinterpret its main events in our own way, to form a new version to suit the political situation, the center of which is the desire to assign almost equal responsibility to the USSR with Hitler’s Germany for its origin.

Despite all the differences in views on the policies of individual states in the period between the two world wars, the Munich deal, as a result of which England and France, with the support of the United States, sanctioned the division and then the seizure of Czechoslovakia by Hitler's Germany, was firmly established in the minds of most people as synonymous with the policy of betrayal and pandering to the aggressor ", summed up Zakharova.
