This was stated today by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
“The declaration of independence by the Republic of Crimea in March 2014 and the entry of the peninsula into Russia was a legal form of realizing the right of Crimeans to self-determination in a situation where a coup d’etat with the use of force took place in Ukraine. All this happened against the backdrop of rampant nationalist radicals who did not hesitate to terrorize and intimidate opponents and the population of entire regions,” Zakharova said.
In her opinion, life has confirmed the legitimacy of the decision made three years ago.
“The legality of the exercise of their right to self-determination is especially clearly visible today in the light of the shameful and bloody struggle waged by the Kyiv regime against its own people. It is not difficult to imagine what the transfer of the Ukrainian political realities of recent years to the Crimean land would have led to if the peninsula had remained part of Ukraine. It’s even easier to do this if you remember the deplorable results of Crimea’s stay in the Ukrainian state,” Zakharova said.
She emphasized that ensuring sustainable socio-economic development of Crimea continues to be an absolute priority in Russia.
“There is active construction of new and reconstruction of old structural facilities. There has been a trend toward growth in the economy and industrial production; the unemployment rate in Crimea is lower than the Russian average. All these changes are taking place against the backdrop of Western sanctions against the peninsula, as well as ongoing provocations from Ukraine, attempts at a water energy blockade, and air, sea, and passenger rail and postal communications interrupted by Kiev. It’s unlikely that anyone will argue that the situation on the peninsula is close to ideal,” Zakharova said.
