Zakharova believes that Volker did not read the Minsk agreements
During his visit to Donbass, the US Presidential Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker “traditionally voiced a number of odious theses.”
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told reporters about this today.
“Among them is the refusal of the American envoy to recognize the very fact of the existence of the Donbass republics. This indicates that either he did not read the Minsk agreements themselves, or does not want to notice the obvious - they are signed by representatives of Donetsk and Lugansk. Without direct dialogue with them, it is simply impossible to make progress in resolving the conflict, be it steps in the sphere of politics and security, or discussions regarding the presence of UN representatives in the region,” Zakharova said.
She questioned Volcker's status as a mediator in resolving the conflict in Donbass.
“By playing along with Kyiv’s militaristic mood and openly lobbying for the idea of supplying lethal weapons there, which certainly will not bring peace, Mr. Volker is not just adding fuel to the fire, but also associating himself with one of the parties to the conflict. This calls into question the role of a mediator in resolving the internal Ukrainian crisis, which he claims to play,” Zakharova said.
She considers it no coincidence that after the departure of the American guest, the Ukrainian armed forces intensified provocations near Gorlovka and in a number of other settlements.
“Volcker’s support is perceived by the Kyiv authorities as an obvious indulgence in military adventures. We proceed from the fact that the conflict in Donbass has no military solution. It can and should be settled peacefully on the basis of the Minsk agreements. It is obvious that Western representatives who make inspection trips to Ukraine should often remind Kyiv of the need for their strict implementation,” Zakharova said.
