Zakharova saw the first signs of adequacy in the West’s attitude towards Ukraine
The Russian Foreign Ministry, with its statements on Ukraine, “forces Western countries to react,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The official representative of the Russian foreign policy, Maria Zakharova, stated this on air on the Rossiya-1 TV channel.
“We are implementing a set of measures to stir up the international community and encourage it to react, several years late, to the information terrorism that is happening in Ukraine,” Zakharova said.
She argues that such tactics pay off. If a couple of years ago the OSCE organization and the European Union did not notice at all what was happening in Ukraine, now they have begun to make statements.
“Even if they are not completely objective, they already exist. We see how public organizations that deal with freedom of speech have acted as a united front in connection with the arrest of the editor-in-chief of RIA Novosti Ukraine. We saw Chancellor Merkel's statement. It could not help but follow, because a week ago, Germany became concerned that the Russian embassy might not issue a visa to a journalist who helped the informant Rodchenkov in promoting materials discrediting Russian sports. There was a reason to ask them a question,” Zakharova said.
She also sees progress in the tone of the statement from the US State Department, which expressed understanding of Kyiv’s concerns about Russian “active propaganda.”
“A few years ago they would have been completely defensive. Now, one way or another, we hear calls for Kyiv to think about it and fulfill its obligations to protect journalists. This trend is less obvious in the United States, but more so in Europe,” Zakharova said.
