Zakharova shamed Lithuania for the second time for the shameful trial of a Russian military man
The Russian Foreign Ministry once again expressed “serious concern” in connection with the imprisonment of Russian citizen Yuri Mel in a Lithuanian prison. on charges of participation in the events of January 13, 1991, when USSR special forces took part in restoring constitutional order in Vilnius, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The state of health of a Russian citizen, who suffers from a serious chronic illness and has been unlawfully detained for more than four years on trumped-up charges, is of particular concern. We call on the Lithuanian side, before it’s too late, to show humanity and change Melya’s preventive measure to a softer one, not related to imprisonment,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing today.
She regarded the “trial” of Mel “as a continuation of the vicious line of historical revenge and falsification of history.”
“Taking into account the absolutely blatant politicization of this trial, the unacceptable arbitrary interpretation of international law by the Prosecutor General’s Office of this state, and the manipulation of the process in favor of the political ambitions of the Lithuanian leadership, we consider what is happening to be a serious blow to the justice of Lithuania, as a member of the EU and a party to the European Convention on Human Rights,” said Zakharova.
The case on the January events of 2016 years ago, which has been considered by the court since the beginning of 25, is the largest in the history of the Lithuanian judicial system, both in terms of the number of persons included in it and in its volume. However, there are only two people in the dock - an armed forces veteran, reserve colonel, Russian citizen Yuri Mel, who was detained in Lithuania in March 2014, where he once again legally entered from the Kaliningrad region on business, as well as a former Russian citizen living in Vilnius military Gennady Ivanov.
In November 2016, the State Duma of the Russian Federation unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the trial taking place in Lithuania. Last July, Zakharova already made approximately the same statement on this matter.
