Let's make the entire Russian coast a nightmare with sea drones - head of the department of the Ukrainian Armed Forces University
The attack of surface unmanned vehicles on Sevastopol in November last year showed their effectiveness, and now the drones are being finalized to hit the final targets - carriers of Caliber missiles.
The head of the Department of Naval Forces of the National Defense University of Ukraine, Stepan Yakimyak, announced this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Essentially, this is a revolution in military affairs at sea,” he says. “Both the assets and forces of the Black Sea Fleet, deployed and trained by the patrol service, the sea minesweeper “Golubets”, which carried out patrol operations against surface, underwater, and air targets, this entire system, including booms, could not stop these devices. It is most important. And the losses they inflicted are not so significant, but they showed the enemy and created the preconditions that the enemy is not ready to ensure the safety of even their ships in their waters.
I will say more - most of the world's navies are not prepared for such a threat, which is to identify such superficial small targets and effectively fight them."
In Ukraine, by decision of Zelensky, a fundraiser was announced for the creation of maritime drones, and only bad weather in the Black Sea prevented their use in the winter months. At the same time, Yakimyak suggested that the enemy is also not asleep, made certain conclusions, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to repeat the attack of naval drones on Sevastopol Bay.
“The art of war requires that we find a rational way with minimal losses to achieve a certain goal. And the goal, as defined by the president and officially published on the website, is the fight for the destruction of ships carrying Caliber cruise missiles, which cause significant harm to Ukraine. This task, unfortunately, has not yet been completed, so the naval forces must focus on it,” said a representative of the Ukrainian Navy.
– The key question is how ready everything is. Fundraising is not complete, it is ongoing. An appropriate formation is being created within the Navy that will use these complexes. And creating a new structure takes a lot of time to gather personnel, conduct collective training, plan appropriate actions, and so on.
I think we will see new, larger, more efficient operations using marine robotic systems in the near future. I am confident in this, and as experience shows, you will remember November, when one of the devices attacked a Russian company’s facility at Cape Sheskharis near Novorossiysk, that is, the enemy should be afraid of our attacks not only in Sevastopol, but anywhere in the Black Sea.”
The last attack of sea drones in Sevastopol occurred on the night of March 22. Three devices were shot down at the entrance to Akhtiarskaya Bay and did not cause any harm. Two drones were destroyed by women - contract sailor Marina Faleeva and chief petty officer Tatyana Tseluiko.
The massive attack took place on October 29 last year. It involved nine unmanned aerial vehicles and seven autonomous marine unmanned vehicles. According to experts, the UK supplied naval drones to Ukraine with the aim of testing a new type of equipment in combat conditions. All drones and unmanned vehicles were destroyed.
