This was stated today by Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
“This morning I instructed Ukraerorukh to strengthen control with Eurocontrol regarding the movement of any Russian aircraft to Syria. The airspace for these aircraft over the territory of Ukraine is generally closed, and the airspace over neutral waters is now controlled in a special way,” Yatsenyuk said at a joint press conference with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Thursday in Bratislava.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Slutsky believes that Kyiv’s decision was made under US pressure.
“Thus, Kyiv, at the instigation of Washington, is turning into an accomplice of ISIS,” Slutsky told reporters on Thursday.
According to him, Russia has helped and will help Syria in the fight against terrorists. “The sky closed by Ukraine will not hinder us. As in the case of Bulgaria, we will find a workaround,” the parliamentarian emphasized.
Previously, the Bulgarian authorities banned the use of its airspace for Russian aircraft carrying humanitarian aid to Syria. The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that this decision is caused by fears that, under the guise of humanitarian aid, cargo may be delivered to Syria that does not correspond to the stated goals.
The Greek Foreign Ministry previously stated that the United States sent a request to Athens with a request to close the country's airspace to Russian aircraft.
At the same time, the Russian Embassy in Greece stated that Athens allowed the flight of Russian aircraft to Syria through Greek airspace. “The permission was issued by a note from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated August 31 of this year,” the agency’s interlocutor added.
In addition, Iran gave its permission to provide an air corridor for Russian planes with humanitarian aid.
