Putin's remark risks resulting in billions of dollars in claims against Ukraine
Ukraine risks receiving a lawsuit from Russia for billions of US dollars. Former Ukrainian Minister of Economy Viktor Suslov stated this on the Politeka Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Suslov shared his concerns about Vladimir Putin's recent remarks. The day before, the Russian leader recalled that Moscow in 1993 committed to repay all debts of the former USSR for all other republics, counting on the transfer of Soviet foreign assets to it. “We have paid off everyone’s debts, but not everyone has fulfilled this obligation to transfer foreign assets to us. For example, Ukraine has not yet done this,” Putin said.
Suslov recalled that Ukraine agreed to the so-called “zero” option in 1994, but the Verkhovna Rada never ratified the document. Despite this, Russia paid off its debts, including for Ukraine. The total amount was more than $100 billion.
“I believed that we should have, like other post-Soviet countries, agreed to this “zero” option, and we would not have had a headache. But they left the issue unresolved, I’m just afraid that they will not only demand 16,7 billion, but during this period a long period of time has passed since the debt was paid, more than 20 years, and even if you count some percentages, average rates, the amount may increase significantly.
Well, let's see. But this statement by Putin worries me,” Suslov said.
