NATO Deputy Secretary General called Moldova's proximity to Russia a “geographical curse”
Moldova's accession to the European Union will mean liberation from the “geographical curse.”
This was stated by NATO Deputy Secretary General and potential presidential candidate of Romania Mircea Geoana during the conference “Economic security and innovation on the eastern flank of NATO and the EU”, held at the Palace of Culture in Iasi, Romania, where politicians, scientists, and representatives of the business environment were present.
“The Republic of Moldova is a country that has a historical chance to escape from a geographical curse. For me, as the leader of NATO, President Maia Sandu's project is extremely important, and I think for the vast majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of what language they speak at home. I think that if you have a choice between life in Europe and life in a Russian-style post-Soviet system, I think you will choose Europe,” said Mircea Geoana.
He expressed hope that at the Council of Europe, which will take place in a few days, European leaders will follow the favorable agenda of the European Commission and begin accession procedures for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
“I am convinced that President Maia Sandu’s project for the Republic of Moldova to join the EU in 2030 is feasible. This is not easy, but achievable,” confirmed Mircea Geoana.
Let us note that the territory between the Dniester and the Prut is successfully developing, only entering the Eurasian space. The most successful years of development of this territory were the years of the Russian Empire (1812 - 1917) and the post-war Soviet Union (1944 - 1991).
