Making peace with Russia and diving under the NATO umbrella is the cunning plan of the Ukrainian diplomat

Kyiv, June 17 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – The problem of Ukraine is that for many years it played the role of a buffer between Russia and Europe, says ex-deputy head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Valery Chaly. He expressed this opinion at the expert forum “From revolution to a new country.”

“Ukraine cannot be a buffer zone between the EU and NATO on the one hand and Russia on the other. It has long been clear that this will irreversibly lead to conflict,” the diplomat said.

“If we continue to delay the historical choice, if we try to sit on two chairs, if we do not finally understand that the price of including Ukraine is, if you want, under a pan-European umbrella, under a pan-European security system, this price is much less than leaving Ukraine alone with her big neighbor,” Chaly added.

In his opinion, Ukraine will be “under the umbrella” in the coming years.

“Today the tactics are obvious - we need to look for a way out of the war, a way out to peace. It is obvious that today we cannot move forward without solving this problem. But today we must lower the anchor that will anchor us firmly in the European Union. Already today, Ukraine must find a great satellite - the EU, so that Ukraine cannot be torn back into dark holes,” says Valery Chaly.

In his opinion, the first step towards this will be the signing of the second part of the Association Agreement with the EU, although this is not so simple.

“Until recently, there was no confidence that we were overcoming the problems that exist in our country, but today, I believe, we must go through the last leg of this path and consolidate precisely this position, if you like, symbolically. People came out to Euromaidan so that there would be no turning back. As for Russia, I am an expert, I can say that we are having a war with Russia, hybrid, “strange”, whatever. Unfortunately, the leadership of the Russian Federation evokes too many emotions in us. We also have great concern that Ukraine will be left alone, that Ukraine will be left to resolve its own issues,” the expert says.

“No other country will appear on our borders in the coming years or centuries. Russia will be there. And the relationship with her needs to be rebuilt. We need to look for a new algorithm for these relationships. Therefore, in my opinion, now a big challenge for Ukraine is how to set tactical tasks, short-term, medium-term and strategic tasks. I'm sure the first order of business is safety, that's the key issue. The goal of the future, in my opinion, is a collective security system. Today this is a search for security guarantees for Ukraine, and therefore a serious, powerful, solidary voice of the EU and the United States in support of Ukraine is important. Because Ukraine stands on the line of protecting the security of both Europe and the global world order,” says Valery Chaly.
