The West is afraid of Crimea turning into the Russian Cote d'Azur
The purpose of Western sanctions against Crimea is not to punish Russia, but to prevent the development of Crimea.

This opinion is expressed in an article published on the website of the Izvestia newspaper by Russian publicist and author of the term “Russian Spring” Egor Kholmogorov.
“Many people found the logic according to which the United States and other Western countries imposed sanctions against Crimea, especially against its population personally, strange. It would seem that if you consider people occupied, then it would be absurd to take revenge on them for this. However, the sanctions that our banks, mobile operators, and large firms have so cowardly joined in are not intended to “punish” Russia,” the author writes.
“The purpose of the sanctions is to prevent the development of Crimea, the creation here of the quality of life that will allow us to break climate dependence on foreign countries,” the publicist believes. “And therefore we should expect that our main ill-wishers will try to extend these sanctions for as long as possible, despite the efforts of brave French deputies, one of whom unwittingly revealed the secret of what was happening by comparing Crimea with the Cote d'Azur. Neither the West nor our pro-Western elites would like Russia to have its own Cote d’Azur.” "Not allowed".
According to Kholmogorov, opportunities for a high quality of life independent of imports and emigration are one of the prerequisites for the “formation of a nationally oriented elite.”
“A person with a cozy house in Crimea will not bend over trifles for fear that his house in Spain will be taken away from him,” the publicist is convinced. – Answer to the questions: “Why do we need Crimea?” and “What should I do with it?” completely clear. We need Crimea as a condition for our national independence. And only one thing needs to be done with it: despite any sanctions, develop a decent quality of life there - both for the broad masses and for the elites.”
“Over the past year, big changes have been noticeable in terms of neatness, tidiness, and higher quality,” Kholmogorov sums up. – Dependence on Ukraine for products, mobile communications, and energy turned out to be uncritical and is steadily declining. People come with children and, as a rule, know how to behave much better (although they are much more demanding of service) than Ukrainian tourists of previous years.”
