The West should threaten Ukraine with isolation
Resolution of the conflict in Donbass is possible only if there is a consensus among the key players in international politics.
Director of the Agency for Social Communications Sergei Belashko stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent, commenting on the possibility of holding a referendum on the status of Donbass within Ukraine.
“If Moscow, Washington, Brussels, Berlin and Paris make some kind of consensus decision on what to do with Ukraine. And then they will inform the Ukrainian leadership that either it will be like this, or it will not be at all, i.e. there will be a freezing of accounts in all banks, and this will be some kind of real isolation, and not the one that Russia is supposedly in,” Belashko said.
However, he strongly doubts that this is possible.
“Ukraine is clearly supported by a significant part of the world community. These are not allies, but, let's say, patrons. There are more than 40 of them, including countries with developed economies, strong armies, etc. And as long as these countries clearly patronize Ukraine, holding such a referendum, which a priori calls into question the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and, accordingly, reduces the legitimacy of this state, is very unlikely,” Belashko said.
