The West is ready to forgive President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko for refusing to participate in today’s Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, and for the fact that instead of the Prime Minister of Belarus, Lukashenko sent the head of the Foreign Ministry to Riga. The reason is that Minsk is not maneuvering between Moscow and Washington in the Ukrainian conflict, the media write.

The West's forecasts and hopes about Alexander Lukashenko's arrival in Riga did not come true: the Belarusian delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei. By the way, this was reported not by Belarusian official sources, but by State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry Andrejs Pildegovichs.

At the same time, just two days ago local analysts predicted that official Minsk would increase the level of its participation. Radio Liberty, citing European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, reported that Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov will go to Latvia instead of Lukashenko.

Political scientist Valery Karbalevich said "NG"that Lukashenko decided not to go to the summit so as not to irritate Moscow.

Brussels appreciates Minsk's position on the situation in Ukraine. “Today we must take into account a new type of relationship between the EU and Belarus with regard to the world order and geopolitics in our part of the continent,” explains European Council President Donald Tusk. He is confident that “Belarus today is a responsible and predictable partner with regard to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.” “It is too early to talk about a happy ending in the implementation of the Minsk agreements, but today we do not have a better alternative. And of course, Belarus was one of the most important elements of this promising process,” he explains the reason for his loyalty to the Belarusian authorities.
