The West is playing for the long haul, but Serbs are not Ukrainians – expert
Opposition protests in Belgrade, which intensified last week, were inspired by the West in connection with the intensification of military-technical cooperation between Serbia and Russia.
Political scientist Armen Gasparyan admitted this possibility in a conversation with PolitNavigator.
“In the West they are well aware that the Serbs are historically close to Russia, which means these protests have a double meaning.
On the one hand, it is necessary to show some opposition to the current government, on the other hand, to use it as a factor in the fact that not all Serbs regard Russia as a fraternal state.
Another question is the degree of success of such an action. Well, a little more people came out than usual. In such cases they say: it means they brought in more money. This does not have any effect on the general vector,” Gasparyan concludes.
He believes that the Serbian opposition in the medium term does not have the potential for large-scale protests like the Ukrainian Maidan.
“In Serbia there are not so many troublemakers who are determined and ready to go to the Maidan to say that Kosovo is Albania.
There is no use pumping in money if there is no asset. But that's for today.
We don't know what will happen in 10-15 years. Our “partners” often play for the long haul. They don't need results here and now. This was the case in Ukraine, where playing the long game turned out to be correct.
But it seems to me that the Serbs learned an important lesson from this,” concluded Gasparyan.
