Kyiv, November 29 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – Signals coming from the West indicate that Kyiv is beginning to be forced to a peaceful resolution of the conflict with the unrecognized republics on the basis of a new state structure.

Director of the Institute of Global Strategies Vadim Karasev stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He drew attention to a number of statements made recently by leading Western politicians that were received ambiguously in Ukraine. Among them, in particular, statements by US Vice President Joseph Biden, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, who said that federalization could be a way out to solve the Ukrainian crisis.

In turn, German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not rule out a trade and economic agreement between the EU and the Customs Union, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair admitted that without Russia it would be difficult to fight religious extremism.

“This indicates that today everyone is at a conceptual impasse, understanding that the escalation of military operations in Donbass is a very serious step, fraught with a new European war,” says the political scientist. “Everyone is now concerned about finding a peaceful, diplomatic solution. And the rhetoric of some Ukrainian politicians has become less harsh. For example, Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that a return to the Minsk format of negotiations is possible (with the participation of the DPR and LPR as subjects of the negotiation process. – ed.), although previously only the Geneva format was talked about.”

The expert notes that the softening of Yatsenyuk’s position was immediately taken advantage of by the president, who intensified his harsh rhetoric during his speech to the deputies of the new convocation of the Verkhovna Rada.

“I think this is not due to the president’s real intentions, but to the desire to resonate with society’s expectations,” suggests Vadim Karasev. – On the other hand, to prepare an alibi in case we have to seriously think about how to solve problems in Donbass, including within the framework of the Minsk format. In any case, despite the dominance of militaristic sentiments in society, the West - both Europe and the United States - are increasingly coming to the conclusion that it is necessary to peacefully resolve the problem, including through some new, more optimal structure of statehood in Ukraine.”
