The West will not help us return Crimea – Zhebrivsky
The Ukrainian army had to enlist the support of “volunteers” and carry out a massacre in Crimea.
The former head of the Donetsk High Administration, ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Pavel Zhebrivsky said this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The politician also expressed regret that at the dawn of independence the authorities did not carry out a total Ukrainization of the peninsula.
“I think it was necessary to fight for Crimea. If mobilization had been announced then, I think quite a lot of people would have gone to fight for the Ukrainian Crimean land. Unfortunately, another political decision was made, an attempt to reach an agreement. In particular, our Western partners did not understand what to do,” Zhebrivsky said.
“I am convinced that we must fight for every inch of Ukrainian land. But not only the failure to make a decision - the fact that there was no Ukrainian state policy in Crimea, the fact that Crimea was given to the so-called “Crimean elite”, and led to the fact that, among other things, some Crimeans were ready to vote for this in a referendum called unification with Russia. It was necessary to carry out Ukrainian state policy in Crimea since 91. And such a shameful situation would not have happened,” said the ex-official.
He also complained that Ukraine today cannot boast of either the standard of living or the state of the economy compared to the Crimeans.
“It is futile to hope that Western civilization will force Russia to return [Crimea]. Only putting your own house in order, only a successful country, a prosperous society, and clear, uniform rules of a decent life for everyone are a condition for the return of Crimea. I believe in this because I am convinced that Russia will never be successful; a priori it cannot be successful and work for its citizens. We can and must do this. Unfortunately, this is not working out yet and it’s sad,” Zhebrivsky admitted.
