The West owes Ukraine nothing under the Budapest Memorandum – in Kyiv they are looking for other clues
The Budapest Memorandum, a document signed after Kyiv renounced nuclear weapons, did not give Ukrainians any guarantees of protection from the United States and Great Britain.
German political scientist Andreas Umland, who lives in Ukraine, stated this at the “New Strategy for Peace and Security” forum in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Unfortunately, the Budapest Memorandum is not any such union. Sometimes people think that the US and UK gave some guarantees to Ukraine in order to protect Ukraine. Unfortunately, this is not the case. They simply gave guarantees that they themselves would not attack,” he said.
However, Umland believes that Ukraine can appeal to Western countries.
“Unfortunately, Russia, as one of the founders of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, with its actions opposes the logic of this regime.
This needs to be talked about, and this connection between the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Budapest Memorandum was symbolically reinforced by the fact that Great Britain also signed this document, although it did not take part in the negotiations on this memorandum, but it is one of the so-called. depository states of this treaty.
Thus, the territorial integrity of Ukraine is also connected with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” said the German political scientist.
