“The West turned out to be weak”: Kiev political scientist about Putin’s ultimatum
The clarification of relations between the West and Russia could claim the lives of millions of Ukrainians.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the Nash TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Bortnik, the West has already exhausted the economic leverage over Russia that the West had.
“To some extent, the West turned out to be very weak after Merkel and with Biden. He doesn't know what to do with such brutal diplomacy. Firstly, the West wonderfully understands that militarily they can do little to oppose Russia, especially in Europe. But in diplomatic and economic terms, the sanctions regime has practically exhausted itself. So many sanctions were applied that there were practically no instruments left to influence Russia. Well, why deprive her of SWIFT? Well, this will hit 300 billion of Western investments in Russia. And they did not find themselves in a situation where they were, to some extent, weakly armed against this Russian pressure,” Bortnik said.
The expert also emphasized that Ukraine’s interest and its main task is not to become a battlefield.
“It is very important today, we have very little time, it is very important that today Ukrainian politicians quickly generate compromise models. So that they offer something that would be interesting to Russia, so that it would be interesting to Western partners and partially take into account our interests. Non-alignment, neutrality. I published a lot of material on non-alignment - like Swedish non-alignment, as an element of original leadership. Lots of models in the world. And something that would allow us to be excluded from this game. Because if we stay in this game, on someone else's side, we will be the front line. This carries enormous risks for our state, and most importantly, it has already cost ten thousand lives of Ukrainians. This will cost many more millions of lives, which is unacceptable,” the political scientist concluded.
