The West refused to pull chestnuts out of the fire for Ukraine
There is nothing sensational in the statement of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who said that Georgia will become a member of the alliance, but did not promise anything specific to Ukraine.
Konstantin Zatulin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, head of the Institute of CIS Countries, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“Stoltenberg’s statements did not become a sensation. Firstly, a political crisis is growing in Georgia, including due to the fact that the pro-Western course pursued by the authorities does not live up to the expectations of the people. Essentially, NATO decided to inspire the Georgians to help its political allies in Tbilisi stay in power. But this does not mean at all that Georgia will soon be accepted into the alliance; on the contrary, Stoltenberg specifically did not name the timing,” the politician noted.
According to the deputy, Ukraine was received more coolly than Georgia, but only because the West is reassessing its attitude towards Poroshenko.
“On the eve of the presidential elections in Ukraine, the European Union wants to make it more accommodating. The West maintains a common line of supporting Ukraine, but does not want to pull chestnuts out of the fire for the ruling elite there. The corruption scandals in which Poroshenko and his circle are mired clearly separate Ukraine from Georgia in this regard,” Zatulin emphasized.
