The West is trying to offer Belgrade and Pristina the option of the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany
The West finally realized that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic would not recognize Kosovo, so they decided to try the “two Germanys” option.
It is reported Today, reports the correspondent of PolitNavigator.
As a “Western diplomatic source” told the publication, the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia in accordance with a model most similar to the previous relations between Germany and the GDR is again in the spotlight. This is how the publication’s interlocutor commented on the “shuttle diplomacy” of EU and US representatives in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue by Miroslav Lajcak and Matthew Palmer. The West came to this after realizing that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic would not recognize Kosovo, as evidenced by his rhetoric about increasing pressure to his country.
The day before, the Serbian President was supposed to meet informally with Palmer, who arrived in Belgrade after a visit to Pristina, and a meeting between Vucic and Lajcak is scheduled for this afternoon. After this meeting, the Serbian leader will meet with Palmer again, but in an "official form". There are no plans to make statements to the media after these meetings.
According to unofficial information cited by the publication, “in recent months, an idea has emerged from the most influential EU members, primarily France and Germany, to regulate relations between Serbia and Kosovo in such a way that the Serbian authorities do not interfere with Pristina’s membership in the UN.”
“Unlike Serbia, which, as an internationally recognized state, has its own ambassador to the UN, Kosovo’s diplomatic representative will not be called an ambassador,” writes Today. “At the same time, Serbia will not have to remove Kosovo from its map, just as the former West Germany portrayed the former East Germany as part of a single German state.”
It is alleged that the administration of the new US President Joseph Biden agrees with this concept, but official Washington “would be very pleased if Serbia and Kosovo recognized each other.” However, the Danas source explains that despite such messages of mutual recognition, the Americans, “for whom pragmatism is one of the most dominant traits when it comes to foreign policy, understand that the Serbian authorities, led by Aleksandar Vucic, do not agree to recognition , just like the stubborn Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti will never agree with the model of two Germanys.”
“For Kurti, any decision that does not formally mean recognition of Kosovo by Serbia is devastating, especially at this early stage of his new premiership. However, who knows what could happen in the coming months, because Kurti is also aware of the deep economic crisis in Kosovo,” notes the publication’s interlocutor.
He adds that “the economy, that is, investment, is one of the cards played by the West, especially America.”
