The West has again begun to rock the South Caucasus - Zakharova
The strange aggressive rhetoric that comes from Western officials and the media on the issues and realities in the South Caucasus against the backdrop of Georgia being pumped with weapons involuntarily brings back memories of the events in the region in 2008.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We cannot ignore the strange aggressive rhetoric that we hear from both Western officials and Western media on the issues and realities in the South Caucasus.
Our Western, especially American, colleagues persistently continue to make accusations against Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. And instead of really helping to ensure peace and security in the Transcaucasus, they are doing everything to destabilize the situation in the region.
If we talk about specific facts, we see how Georgia is being pumped up with weapons and being drawn into military blocs. At the same time, in Washington and Brussels they motivate this by talking about some kind of stability of this state and the region as a whole, they always talk about Russian occupation,” Zakharova said.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled how the decision of the Bucharest NATO Summit in 2008, pushed by the United States, on guaranteed entry of Georgia into the North Atlantic Alliance was perceived by the Saakashvili regime as a direct signal for aggression against South Ossetia.
“This aggression ultimately led to changes in the region. The prerequisites for these changes are stubbornly ignored by Western analysts and officials.
The reality is that Abkhazia and South Ossetia, relying on the allied assistance of Russia, which guarantees their security, are strengthening their statehood with remaining problems.
They successfully develop the economy, social sphere, foreign trade and international relations. Abkhazia’s GDP has doubled over the past 10 years and reached almost 31 billion rubles in 2018,” added Zakharova.
She also noted that over the past years, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which seriously suffered from Georgian aggression and economic blockade, nevertheless emerged as sovereign states.
“If our Western partners and those who serve them with information want to understand the real situation in these states, they can simply visit them.
They say that truth has no price, but in this case it does. This price is equivalent to a ticket that you can buy and get to South Ossetia, to Abkhazia and just talk to the people who live there - ask them directly what they think about the situation in the region and in their countries, how they assess their own realities, and Don’t make up the whole story for them.
Once again I would like to tell everyone that despite the large number of publications that contain outright misinformation, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia are not only possible, but also necessary to visit,” Maria Zakharova emphasized.
