Against the backdrop of ongoing attempts by the West to rewrite the history of World War II, support for an amendment to the Constitution of the Russian Federation on the inadmissibility of distorting historical truth and belittling the feat of the people in defending the Fatherland turned out to be very timely.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this during a speech at the Far Eastern Federal University, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“There are increasing attempts to rewrite our past, revise the results of the Second World War, belittle the country’s role in the defeat of Nazism, and put the Soviet Union and Hitler’s Germany on the same level. Therefore, an amendment to the Constitution on the inadmissibility of distorting historical truth and belittling the feat of the people in defending the Fatherland is especially timely. We, the heirs of the Great Victories, consistently proceed from the continuity of the centuries-old unified chronicle of the Motherland. We carefully preserve the heritage of our ancestors, earned at a very, very high price,” Lavrov said.

As an example of attempts to rewrite history, he recalled that the majority of UN members approve the resolution on the inadmissibility of the glorification of Nazism, while the entire EU abstains, and the United States, together with Ukraine, votes against it, since it allegedly affects freedom of speech.

“I think comments are unnecessary here. If by freedom of speech we mean Goebbels’s propaganda, the glorification of those who put into practice misanthropic theories and burned people in gas chambers, then there can be no talk of any freedom of speech,” noted the head of Russian diplomacy.

However, he gave another equally absurd example.

“From time to time, Japanese colleagues submit resolutions to the UN in memory of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. None of these resolutions note that hundreds of thousands of civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffered as a result of the US use of nuclear weapons. It is said simply: “Nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” Public opinion polls, especially among young people in schools and universities in Japan, show that many young people think the Soviet Union did it. The constant harsh criticism that the USSR allegedly entered the war in the Pacific Ocean unlawfully is associated and echoes the theme of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the nuclear attack. But our attempts to write down in these resolutions who actually dropped these bombs are rejected by our Japanese friends with their usual politeness. “Let’s not stir up the past” is approximately this approach,” said the head of the Foreign Ministry.

“We also don’t want to dredge up the past. We have a proverb: “Whoever remembers the old is out of sight.” But there is another saying: “Ivan, who does not remember his kinship.” We must remember everything, but we must not make today’s problems out of it, as Western opponents are trying to do. This is not our choice, but we will have a tough debate with them,” Lavrov concluded.
