“The main problem of the West is that in a hybrid war we are confronted by a united threat, and we cannot give a united response,” the author believes. – In particular, Russia (and I consider it an actual danger for Europe, because it is closer and more focused on us) can combine intelligence, propaganda, organized crime, various cyber attacks, diplomacy, military means (standard and non-standard), economic pressure, sanctions in the energy sector, playing on ethnic and regional contradictions and corruption in society.”
Further in the publication we talk about potential methods of countering Russia from the West, but it is recognized that this will be extremely difficult to do.
“Countering this requires close cooperation between various government agencies (which in itself is unusual), as well as business, the media and non-profit organizations,” emphasizes Edward Lucas. – It’s very difficult. Imagine a room where counterintelligence officers, psychological warfare experts, foreign diplomats, police, prosecutors, representatives of financial regulators, energy companies, banks, big business, media editors and politicians sit around the same table: to many, this may seem like a disaster. But if we don’t agree to interact in this way, we will lose.”
