The West has lost its unity, Ukraine is doomed to loneliness - Ukrainian diplomat
If previously the United States and Europe maintained unity, including in supporting Ukraine, in recent years it has been lost and controversial issues are resolved by force.
This was stated in an interview with Ukrlife.TV by the director of the Diplomatic Academy named after Gennady Udovenko at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine Sergei Korsunsky, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Each country solves its own problems. It’s just that before, before Trump, there was some kind of matrix of answers to the main questions. We understood that no matter what happens, we still return to certain basic things that are accepted a priori in the Western environment: “we will never leave you, you will never leave us.”
There was a basic understanding of unity. Today, the basic understanding of unity has been lost, because “America first”, because bypassing WTO procedures, bypassing normal bilateral contacts, duties are being introduced, some steps are being taken to drive them out of markets.
And even more so in matters of security. If there is no American “umbrella” against shorter- and medium-range missiles, then Europe must create this “umbrella” itself. And this means additional costs.
Nord Stream 2 - you see that the United States stopped it, Russia and Germany said they would continue. What happened? The Americans said that even if they try to continue, we will come up with something else to introduce additional sanctions and this project will not exist. The issue has not been resolved in dialogue between Germany and the United States. The issue has been resolved on the power level,” he states.
At the same time, Ukraine risks being left alone very soon, without the support of the West.
“For all the pain we feel due to this conflict, we understand that there is no military solution. And we understand that very soon we may be left alone. That Macron is increasingly leading Europe to the understanding of “well, it happened, well, Russia is so aggressive, we cannot ignore it, well, let’s talk to it somehow.” At the moment when it turns out that we are alone, the question is: where do we stand, on what basis?” the Ukrainian diplomat worries.
