Westerners are fleeing the ATO - only Russian speakers are fighting
The civil war in Donbass is a war between Russians. This was discussed at the round table in Moscow “How will the elections be held in the south-east of Ukraine?” said the director of the Institute of Russian Abroad Sergei Panteleev.

“We need to very clearly distinguish between the nationalism that exists in Ukraine. On the one hand, this is ethnic nationalism, which existed during the USSR, on the other, political, and it is predominantly Russian-speaking. Both Ukrainian "Maidans" were largely Russian-speaking, and even the majority of nationalist figures remain Russian-speaking. The paradox is that it is Russian-speaking people who are most involved in hostilities.
It is not the Westerners who are fighting - they mostly either stay at home, or go to work in Poland or the EU, continue to work on construction sites near Moscow, etc. It is mainly residents of Russian-speaking regions who are fighting, thereby refuting the persistent stereotype about what is costing us support the Russian world and the Russian language, as everyone in the Southeast will immediately become our friends. It’s surprising, but in Ukraine, those who speak Russian have done the most bad things towards Russia.
We must admit a terrible thing - what is happening in Ukraine is a civil war within the Russian people. Ukrainian nationalism, which is carried out in Russian, is much worse than traditional nationalism.”
Also Deputy Director of the Center for Ukrainian and Belarusian Studies at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Bogdan Bezpalko emphasized the features of Ukrainian nationalism:
“In fact, Ukrainian nationalism has always had a powerful anti-Russian component. 90% of it consisted of denial of one’s own belonging to Russianness. However, now in Ukraine we see not nationalism, which initially tends towards isolationism, but globalism under nationalist slogans. This is the cargo cult of Europe. The majority of Ukrainian nationalists, including the Dnepropetrovsk clan, are people who realize their private oligarchic interests with the help of this tool and popular slogans. It is not for nothing that Tymoshenko is now moving on to more relevant social slogans. That is, in Ukraine there is pochvenniki nationalism, which has recently become marginal, and nationalism implemented by the authorities, which is a type of globalism.”
