Western companies will not spoil relations with Gazprom for the sake of reverse, - expert

There are rumors in Brussels that the European Union Antimonopoly Committee is preparing to resume hearings on Gazprom's actions that violate EU law.
Georg Zachmann, an expert on the oil and gas sector and the electric power industry at the German Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting Berlin Economics, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.
According to him, the provisions of Gazprom’s contracts with Western companies that prohibit re-export will be reviewed. These types of arrangements do not comply with European competition law.
Currently, Gazprom is implicitly resorting to the practice of “punishing” countries that supply gas to Ukraine through re-export. This explains the recent decline in Russian gas supplies by 10-30% to a number of Eastern European countries, says Riccardo Giucci, executive director of Berlin Economics. This is a kind of “warning shot” from the Russian gas supplier.
Western companies are unlikely to want to spoil relations with Gazprom, says Georg Zachmann. Therefore, an antitrust investigation against him is unlikely to have any effect. “Western companies do not want to anger Gazprom and violate the provisions of contracts with it. Even if they are not legally valid, in fact Western companies cannot ignore them,” says Georg Zachmann.
As PolitNavigator reported, according to Riccardo Giucci, reverse gas for Ukraine will not be cheaper than direct supplies from Gazprom under the previous contract.
