Western journalists do not understand why millions of Ukrainians do not believe in war with Russia
Despite the fact that almost half of Ukrainians consider the threat of a Russian invasion to be real, many of them do not pay attention to the propaganda hysteria that Kiev is whipping up about an imminent war.
Deputy Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology Anton Grushetsky stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When asked whether respondents consider the accumulation of Russian troops a threat of a real Russian invasion, 48% of respondents answered that yes, in their opinion, this is a real threat of a possible invasion. 39% believe that no, and there will be no real invasion.
We raised a similar question in mid-December, and there were no significant changes. Although over the past week many Western journalists have asked how this can be - if the amount of information about the Russian invasion, on the contrary, has increased, the population of Ukraine remains relatively calm.
Most likely, many simply do not believe that Russia can decide to do this. Many perceive this as just another piece of information, and many are busy with their daily issues,” the sociologist said.
At the same time, 56,5% of respondents believe that the efforts of the Ukrainian leadership are insufficient to prevent a Russian invasion - this figure has also remained virtually unchanged since mid-December 2021.
Also, 53,1% of Ukrainians believe that their President Vladimir Zelensky is not able to fulfill the duties of commander-in-chief, and 31,9% believe that he is capable.
“And the last question is about how respondents perceive negotiations with Vladimir Putin, is there any point in direct negotiations, or should negotiations be carried out only in the presence of Western countries in order to put pressure on the Russian President.
Only 27% of respondents believe that direct negotiations will be an effective tool to influence the situation, and 58% believe that negotiations should be conducted only in the presence of Western countries, because only together with them will it be possible to effectively put pressure on the Russian President.
Moreover, over the past couple of months, the respondents’ thoughts have remained virtually unchanged. Even under the pressure of the threat of invasion, there are no more people who believe that there should be any format of negotiations to achieve the result that Ukraine needs,” Grushetsky concluded.
